Bio7nisa Eco7nisa is a non-profit environmental research organisation. Our work today focuses on regenerative agriculture, soil life and the productive use of organic residues. Our journey began long before the organisation was founded, through active environmental campaigning and everyday work with organic products.

From Organic Products to Regenerative Agriculture

Beginning in 1999, two years of work at OIKOZOI, a cooperative of organic producers and consumers, gave us first-hand experience of both the opportunities and the challenges of producing and supplying organic food.

In April 2004, we opened BIOCAFE in Corfu, a pioneering café and snack bar serving organic products. We had a clear goal: to make organic products the everyday choice for our daily needs.

Our question was specific: could we offer light meals made with certified organic ingredients at prices close to conventional alternatives, making them an accessible and economical choice for the average consumer?

This question took us beyond supplying products to examining how they are grown. Nature recycles organic matter, while life in the soil supports plant nutrition. We wanted to explore how to make better use of these processes, reducing the need for purchased inputs and lowering farming costs.

In 2013 and 2014, we took part in a DIO programme promoting organic products on Paxos. This experience strengthened our belief that the island, with its distinctive natural environment and protected areas, could become a place for pilot organic farming projects linked to ecotourism. Together with renewable energy, we see the potential for a broader ecological transition on the island.

While looking for ways to reduce the cost of organic farming, we discovered regenerative agriculture. It has been the main focus of our work ever since.

Founding Bio7 and Planning the Centre

In 2017, we founded Bio7nisa Eco7nisa to research and share practices that restore ecosystems, protect biodiversity and help address climate change.

Our research led us to the work of Dr Elaine Ingham and the Soil Food Web School. We studied and experimented with practices focused on soil biology, biologically active compost and restoring the soil food web. We also follow and study the experience of other regenerative agriculture organisations, including the Rodale Institute and Advancing Eco Agriculture (AEA).

In 2019, we decided to work towards establishing a Hellenic Centre for Regenerative Agriculture: a place connecting research with education, collaboration with growers and practical fieldwork.

Where We Are Today

We aim to test methods that can improve soil function, reduce external inputs and offer economically viable solutions for growers. Recording and evaluating the results is an essential part of this work.

Where We Want to Go

Our goal is for the Centre to become an established place for research, demonstration and education, open to growers, scientists, organisations and members of the public who want to take part.

We want to help develop farming that revitalises soil, supports biodiversity, retains more water and helps store carbon. We also want these practices to be practical and affordable.

The question we first asked at BIOCAFE still guides us: how can we make the ecological choice easy and economical in everyday life? Today, we seek the answer through soil, food production and collaboration.
